What happens when you die

In the unfortunate event of your death, it’s important to know what will happen to your RPS pension benefits when you die.

The benefits payable depend on your type of membership, and is summarised below:

Spouse and Dependent’s Pension

Spouse and eligible dependent’s pensions are calculated in the same way, but it is important to note that if you have an eligible dependent, which could be a long-term partner for example, any pension awarded is reviewed after 10 years. The review does not apply to an eligible spouse’s pension, as these are paid for life.

If your spouse or eligible dependent is more than 10 years younger than you, a reduction may be applied to their pension to reflect that it is likely to be paid for longer.

Children’s pensions

An eligible child is under age 18, or if they are in full-time education, under age 23.
If there are more than two children, the two youngest eligible children will receive children’s pensions.

Nomination Form

It is really important that you tell us who you would like the Trustee to pay any lump sum death benefits to in the event of your death.
You can update your Nomination Form electronically in your online RPS Member Account.
